A Deep Dive into Helene’s Springville Donation Controversy

SPRINGVILLE, Ala. (WBMA) – A viral TikTok from Micheal Stapleton of Pissed off Nation @pissedoffnation_hp accuses Caroline Burton of Burton Stores of stealing donations and money intended for victims of Hurricane Helene.

In the video, Stapleton says, “Caroline Burton locked up every supply you all donated and took possession of every monetary donation you all made on behalf of an angry nation.”

We spoke with Burton who helped Stapleton, who helped Helen’s victims in part by repairing and rebuilding the bridges needed to access homes, with his donation drive.

Burton contacted Stapleton, saying, “I told him I wanted to help. I had two grocery stores and felt like I could do some good.” She offered a warehouse in one of the buildings her family owned.

But on Saturday, she reached out saying she no longer wanted to help.

“I just had to feel like I was doing the footwork and getting the donations,” Burton said. She also cited a video in which Stapleton claimed Burton hosted a Thanksgiving event that contained her home number as being too important because she was constantly getting calls and didn’t know what they were about.

With her text message to Stapleton, she changed the locks on his building. Something he took issue with, leading to his TikTok about him.

Stapleton said: “I just want the building to be unlocked and have unimpeded access. There’s no reason why the only things in the building should be our stuff. You can’t just lock us up like that when you offer to store this for us as long as necessary.”

Burton explained that she would unlock the doors whenever he wanted if he set a time and told Stapleton Sunday to move the supplies out of his building, and he could coordinate that with his lawyer.

But without a key, Stapleton says it’s not that simple, “there’s just three semi-trailer loads there. How do I get that out of there in a 20-foot and 24-foot enclosed trailer? I have to put we have the means in place, we have to get him out of there.”

Burton also made cash donations through Burton Records. Burton presented documentation of donations totaling $12,097 as well as a list of dated withdrawals from Stapleton signed by him.

I went through all the late night paperwork and noted each day that donations started, 10/4. I put in every day how many donations we received, that equates to that $12,097.

But Stapleton accuses him of stealing the donation money:

If you look at what we’ve done in supplies, we’ve done half a million supplies if you only spend 10% of that in donations, which wouldn’t be far off, you’re looking at $50,000. I don’t think we hit that number, but I think we hit $20,000. To make $10-11,000, I think she’s lying.

However, we received information that a Venmo donation was made through Burton for the Stapleton relief mission, the charge was titled “hurricane relief.”

Burton says the money was not included because Stapleton had promised $1,000 for his workers’ labor and was owed $1,000 for expenses for their trip to North Carolina where she used his own money, not donation money.

Following Stapleton’s TikTok posts, Burton received nonstop calls, social media mentions, and threatening text messages, including threats, leading her to file an incident report with the Office of the Commissioner. St. Clair County Sheriff Tuesday.

We spoke with the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office and were told the Springville Police Department is handling the investigation. However, Springville Police Chief Wayne Walton declined to provide any information or answer questions about the investigation and said the sheriff’s office has taken over.

Stapleton tells us he also filed an incident report with the Springville Police Department.

Burton has an active wrongful death investigation and Stapleton is a convicted felon for escape from first property theft and burglary.
