Christmas tree arrives for lighting and rink opening event in Mississauga

The Christmas season has arrived with the official lighting of Mississauga taking place soon.

Preparations were underway this week for the annual Light Up the Square event on Saturday 23 November.

The tree is up and crews were installing the lights Friday.

The Nov. 23 event marks the first official lighting of the Christmas tree and the opening of the city’s largest outdoor skating rink, at Celebration Square at 300 City Center Dr., according to the City of Mississauga.

Evening events include skating: ice skate rentals are available on site; photos with Santa Claus; lighted photo stations throughout the square; LED swings for playing; a Paintbox Kids Zone with a giant interactive digital graffiti wall; makeup; a coloring station; and performances from the Dance Culture Pack at 6:40 p.m. and 7:40 p.m.

There will also be food trucks and artisan vendors in partnership with Night Market Toronto.

Here is the event schedule:

  • 5 p.m. – DJ D-Smooth Live Spin
  • 5:20 p.m. – Twisted Dog Theater puppet show
  • 6:15 p.m. – Noëlle
  • 7 p.m. – Official ceremony and Christmas tree lighting with the mayor and council
  • 7:20 p.m. – Noelle’s Encore Performance
  • 7:50 p.m. – UN Jefferson
  • 8:20 p.m. – Trash Panda Brass

Celebration Square will also be home to art installations for the holiday season.

The moonGARDEN light installation will be present on Celebration Square from November 23 to January 6. Created in 2012 by Lucion, moonGARDEN has been seen by more than a million people and has toured the world, from the Festival of Lights in Lyon to Brussels, Medellin, Beijing, and now Mississauga.

Featuring four majestic spheres that host delicate shadow theaters and soundscapes, this light installation celebrates a more inclusive world.

The square is also home to a special 50th anniversary video mapping installation on the facade of the Hazel McCallion Central Library.

In collaboration with AVA Animation and Visual Arts Inc., Mississauga artists will transform the north façade of the Hazel McCallion Central Library into a giant canvas for a large-scale 3D projection on Light Up the Square, nightly between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. h from November. .22 to 24.

Through a series of workshops, selected artists have learned new skills in digital art and will bring their works celebrating Mississauga’s 50th anniversary to life through projection mapping.
