President Joe Biden has canceled more than $166 billion in student debt – see how much in each state – NBC New York

President Joe Biden made student debt relief a central point of his administration.

The massive pardon he promised during the election campaign was struck by the Supreme Court, and some of its other debt relief initiatives, such as the Save on a valuable study plan and his negotiated regulatory planare currently being held in court.

But his administration still managed to release $166.5 billion in student loans, according to Data from the Ministry of Education.

Through Public service loan forgivenessincome-based repayment — including a group of borrowers able to obtain forgiveness thanks to the SAVE plan before it is blocked – total and permanent disability discharge and borrower defense against repayment releases, about 4.4 million borrowers nationwide have had their debt canceled under Biden. Borrowers received an average debt forgiveness of $38,207.

“From my first day in office, I promised to fight to ensure that higher education is a ticket to the middle class, not a barrier to opportunity,” Biden said in a statement. October Statement.

On average, borrowers in the District of Columbia received more debt forgiveness than any other state. Under the Biden administration, about 15,000 residents got an average of nearly $53,000 in loans per borrower. It’s also worth noting that DC residents have the highest average student debt balances overall, averaging nearly $55,000, according to Educational Data Initiative.

After Washington DC, Vermont, Maryland and New York averaged the highest number of debt cancellations per borrower. Vermont is the only state where the average forgiveness amount exceeds $50,000 per borrower.

Pathways to Debt Cancellation

Most of Biden’s debt forgiveness was accomplished through existing programs like PSLF and defense of the borrower against repaymentthe latter offering debt relief to borrowers who attended schools or educational programs that defrauded students by making false statements or outright lying about positive results.

Although Biden did not create the aid programs, his administration has made changes and updated processes to ensure that students can actually have their loans repaid through these avenues.

Before his tenure, only 7,000 borrowers received debt relief through PSLF, for example. And as of March 2021, only 32 out of 2 million potentially eligible borrowers had received loan discharge through income-based repayment, according to the National Consumer Law Center.
