St. Louis County suspends requests to freeze property taxes for seniors

ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. – A property tax freeze is currently on hold for seniors in St. Louis County.

The county said the system is being upgraded and will be back up and running Monday morning. Since the application system launched on October 1, more than 30,000 people have applied.

“We expected a pretty big crush in the first few days, and we saw it. We worked beyond normal operating hours the first two or three, but that has tapered off,” said St. Louis County Revenue Director Tony Smee.

In addition to the 30,000 applications already submitted, another 100,000 seniors could apply before the June deadline.

“We’ve had a very high number of applications, and the applications themselves are data-rich. These are images of documents and many documents,” he said.

Documents and images take up a lot of space in the computer system, this is where upgrading the system will help. This will also cut application times in half.

“When people come in and they have everything, you know, they’ve read the materials in advance, they know what they need to bring. It’s a four or five minute process,” Smee added.

The break on applications gives the Smee team the weekend to review some of the existing applications.

“Since the system has been shut down, we are taking the time to work on the system and start eliminating some of these duplicate applications,” he said.
