Jewish leaders hope charges will be laid after police raid Vancouver home of pro-Palestinian activist

A prominent leader in British Columbia’s Jewish community is hoping a police raid on a Vancouver home linked to a pro-Palestinian group — recently deemed a terrorist entity by the government — will ultimately result in charges.

“Justice delayed is justice denied,” said Nico Slobinsky, vice president of the Center for Israel and Jewish Affairs – Pacific Region.

The VPD Major Crimes Section and Emergency Response Team executed a search warrant Thursday at a home located in the 1800 block of 1st Avenue East.

Police said one person was taken into custody and then released “pending the end of the investigation”, carried out under an article of the Penal Code on incitement to hatred.

The person has not been named by police, but CTV News has confirmed that the targeted home is the listed address of Charlotte Kates, a member of Samidoun, a pro-Palestinian group that the federal government recently added to its list of terrorist groups.

“Since the October 7 terrorist attacks by Hamas, the Vancouver Jewish community has experienced an escalation of hatred,” Slobinky said.

“Including at the hands of Charlotte Kates, Samidoun and others,” he continued.

Kates was arrested in April after she hailed Hamas’ October 2023 attack on Israel as “heroic and courageous” in a speech at a rally.

Vancouver police would potentially recommend several hate-related charges to B.C. Prosecution Service, but these have not yet been approved.

“Every day that charges are not filed is another day that Kates, Samidoun and others can continue to incite anti-Semitic violence and hatred against our community,” Slobinsky said.

CTV News asked BCPS for an update on this investigation Friday, but did not receive a response.

It’s unclear if Kates is the person arrested in Thursday’s raid, which has not yet resulted in charges.

CTV News asked her lawyer if she had been arrested again this week, but received no response and knocks on the door of her property went unanswered.
