Access to crucial treatment available for SWLA patients

LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) – A grant is helping bring crucial treatment closer to home for patients in southwest Louisiana.

B&G Family Hope for Inclusion To agree supports local physical and occupational therapists in obtaining certification in dynamic movement intervention (DMI) therapy.

Founder Julia Bourgeois says physiotherapy is vital for children facing mobility issues.

“It’s used by children to help them strengthen their motor skills, so we see it a lot in children with spina bifida, cerebral palsy and any neuromuscular delay or developmental delay,” Bourgeois said.

Currently, the closest certified DMI therapists are in Houston and Baton Rouge.

After a resounding number of applications, four physical therapists were chosen for southwest Louisiana.

All grant recipients accept Medicaid.
