Alcaraz expects hungry Djokovic to be big threat in Australia

Nov 16 (Reuters) – Novak Djokovic will be “really dangerous” and ready to compete for Grand Slam trophies when the Serbian returns to the Australian Open next year after a disappointing 2024 campaign, the world number three said Carlos Alcaraz.

After winning three of four Grand Slams last year, Djokovic had a lackluster season by his high standards, with the 24-time champion ruled out of majors for the first time since an injury-plagued 2017 .

The 37-year-old, however, won his first Olympic gold medal by beating Alcaraz in Paris just weeks after their Wimbledon final, to remind fans that he can never be written off.

“A really dangerous player,” Alcaraz told reporters at the ATP Finals when asked what fans could expect from Djokovic at the Australian Open.

“We have already seen that it doesn’t matter if he doesn’t play an official match for two, three or four months, because he will come back and be able to win the tournament, be able to show a very high level. tennis.

“If he goes to Australia hungry, he will be one of the favorites to win Australia.”

Djokovic withdrew from the ATP Finals in Turin due to injury, but Alcaraz said he expects him to be rejuvenated when the first Grand Slam of 2025 begins on January 12.

The Serbian will aim for a record 11th title, while Alcaraz will aim for a first crown at Melbourne Park.

“He’s going to be fresh, that’s for sure. Lots of time with his family,” added Alcaraz after his group stage elimination in Italy.

“He had time to practice a lot, which is pretty good for a tennis player coming to a tournament with motivation.

“It’s going to be fun to watch, that’s for sure.”
