Meta adds new custom feeds feature to chats as competition with Bluesky heats up

Bluesky just released new milestone outlining user surge with record downloads.

The news may be great for the app, but it’s certainly worrying for its main rivals like Meta, whose Threads platform is seriously feeling the heat. That’s why Zuckerberg and his leadership team are rolling out new changes to the Threads app to give it that edge..

If that means copying Bluesky’s famous “custom feed” feature, so be it. Meta I just confirmed its latest test which allows users to pin favorite topics to their platform home screens.

This gives users another great flow separate from the algorithm called “For You” which continues to be in the default view. The same goes for the next flow. This way, users can include personalized feeds by searching for keywords like healthy recipes and then tapping the three-dot menu to create a new feed.

These feeds are personalized by including certain user profiles you would like to see more of and be alerted when something new is posted. On average, users can include up to 128 streams through the app, Meta confirmed.

It’s just a test for now, but if things go as planned, we’ll see a very similar feature that made Bluesky popular. We’ll have to wait for the green signal from Meta before users have access, but it’s certainly a good start.

The offering looks a lot like Bluesky’s custom feed that it rolled out in 2023. The only difference is that Bluesky’s is more technical in its design, while Meta’s version appears to be very clean and simple. This could also address user complaints about the main Threads feed.

The news comes amid celebrations of Bluesky’s success this month and the month before. Its scale is much smaller than Threads and X, but even with 17 million users, it quickly becomes famous and accelerates its expansion.

After the election, it was shocking to see Bluesky add another million people in just seven days. This is striking because we have also seen Threads grow by 1 million people every day, which the company’s head, Adam Mosseri, has personally confirmed.
