India extend winning streak with victory over China to move to the top of the 2024 Asian Women’s Champions Trophy

The Indian women’s hockey team is the only undefeated team in the 2024 Asian Women’s Champions Trophy.

The Indian women’s hockey team beat China 3-0 in their penultimate match of the group stage in Bihar. 2024 Asian Women’s Champions Trophy at Rajgir Hockey Stadium today. The heavyweight clash saw Sangita Kumari (32′), Salima Tete (37′) and Deepika (60′) find the back of the net, capping a complete performance from India.

This match solidified India’s position at the top of the table while Deepika also secured her place at the top of the goalscoring charts, now with eight goals to her name.

India took the initiative from the starting whistle, with Deepika earning a penalty corner seconds after the whistle. She attempted a powerful shot towards goal, but Chinese goalkeeper Surong Wu made a strong save. The Women in Blue dictated the tempo with fluid passing and smart moves, while China could only manage occasional counter-attacks.

Five minutes into the quarter, Sharmila collected the ball at mid-line and headed towards the shooting circle. She passed to Sunelita, who quickly found Deepika, but the rushing goalkeeper thwarted her attempt. As China gained momentum in the game and regained ground, neither team was able to break down the other’s defense and the first quarter ended in a goalless draw.

China had the first chance in the second quarter on a counterattack. Chencheng Liu threw the ball across the goal, forcing Indian goalkeeper Bichu to rush, but no one was available to push the ball. India endured and were awarded a penalty corner five minutes into the quarter, but Udita’s shot was easily saved.

The next chance fell to China’s Yanan Xu, who attempted a reverse tomahawk from the left wing, but her shot found the side netting. Indian women’s hockey team responded by earning another penalty corner, but they too failed to convert. The game became more end-to-end, with neither team willing to give an inch, and the stalemate continued into the second half.

India stepped up a gear in the third quarter. Deepika grabbed a passing error high up the field and found Lalremsiami alone in the center of the shooting circle, but her first shot was easily saved. China had more possession in the final quarter in search of their first goal, but India showed exemplary defense and remained calm on the ball. Five minutes from the end of the match, Sunelita Toppo fired a powerful shot towards the goal, but it was blocked. China quickly recovered the ball to look for a goal on the counter, but Bichu was attentive to ward off any danger.

In a bid to catch up with India and further strengthen their offensive prowess, China took out their goalkeeper with three minutes remaining in the match. However, India held firm and launched a counterattack in the last minute, resulting in a penalty corner. With no keeper in goal, Deepika stepped up and unleashed a powerful burst, sealing the match at 3-0 in India’s favor.
