Indiana football coach Curt Cignetti agrees to new contract, raise

BLOOMINGTON – According to an IndyStar source, Indiana and football coach Curt Cignetti have agreed to a new contract that will make him the highest-paid employee in university history.

Cignetti will benefit from both significantly improved financial terms and additional guarantees regarding program infrastructure and support. Those assurances likely include commitments in the form of things like staffing and salaries for assistant coaches.

IU is also in the planning and financing stages of a major renovation of Memorial Stadiuma Cignetti can now help shape.

“I am beyond appreciative of the tremendous commitment, trust and support of (IU) President Pam Whitten and Athletic Director Scott Dolson,” Cignetti said in a press release confirming his new terms. “Manette and I love Bloomington and are grateful for how the IU community has welcomed us. I look forward to leading this exceptional program and doing my part to continue the momentum of Hoosier football.”

Cignetti’s new deal will extend his stay in Bloomington beyond the initial terms agreed upon when he left James Madison last winter. That contract ran through 2029 and guaranteed Cignetti $4.5 million in annual compensation, with that figure increasing via built-in increases throughout the life of the deal.

Officially, Cignetti will sign a new contract with a duration of eight years and an average annual value of $8 million. He will also receive a $1 million annual retention bonus. Details of Cignetti’s year-by-year compensation were not immediately available.

The contract runs through November 30, 2032. IndyStar understands that Cignetti is still in line to receive bonuses earned from this season’s performance, additions that already total $600,000 and could get even better.

“After the first meeting with Coach Cignetti,” IU athletic director Scott Dolson said in a statement released Saturday, “we felt very confident that he was a great fit for what we were trying to build with our football program. We believed IU could become a winning program, and we love what he’s building here.

Cignetti’s first year in Bloomington was a whirlwind. Hoosiers already setting program records for most wins (10) and best start (10-0) in a single campaign. They are in the driver’s seat for a spot in the first 12-team College Football Playoff, ranked #5 in last week’s polland they will stay in the Big Ten title race with an upset win at Ohio State next Saturday.

A leading candidate for Big Ten and National Coach of the Year honors, Cignetti played a pivotal role in that turnaround. Bringing with him a substantial portion of his team, as well as several James Madison players, Cignetti immediately transformed a flagging Indiana program into one of the most dominant two-way teams in the country.

Becoming more consistently competitive in football has been a priority for Dolson and Whitten since taking over their respective roles in 2020 and 2021. Retaining a coach already boasting never-before-seen metrics of success at Indiana signals their intent to continue pushing the bar upwards.

“Since arriving on campus, Coach Cignetti has been the architect of one of the greatest turnarounds in college football and has shown the world that IU is also a football school,” Whitten said in the release. “Coach Cignetti exemplifies IU’s goal of winning in everything we do. The success he brought to Indiana football highlights everything that is incredible about Indiana University. We are excited that Coach Cignetti and his wonderful family will be a part of Hoosier Nation for many years to come. »
