We’ve seen foldable screens, rollable screens, and even transparent screens, so it was only a matter of time before we saw expandable screens. LG has just unveiled a new “expandable” screen that can expand up to 50% without losing quality.

Revealed during Seoul Fashion Week in collaboration with designers Youn-Hee Park and Chung-Chung Lee, LG’s new display concept is the world’s first extendable screen that can extend by half.

“Expandable screens are considered the ultimate free-form screen technology because they can be freely transformed into any shape, including stretching, folding and rotating.” LG announced. The new prototype features a 12-inch display that extends up to 18 inches, while simultaneously offering high resolution of 100 ppi (pixels per inch) and full red, green and blue (RGB) colors. .

The screen marks a significant improvement over the company’s first expandable concept, revealed in 2022, which only managed a 20% expansion. “This improved extensibility enables diverse display design possibilities, increasing the potential competitiveness of the technology once commercialized,” adds LG.

The company presented numerous concepts for the application of expandable displays, including an automotive panel that expands in a convex shape and can be operated by hand, as well as a portable display attached to firefighter uniforms that provides real-time information.

Although the concept may seem bizarre, LG has suggested practical applications that leverage flexible design, such as interactive panels that adapt to the contours of interiors, particularly in vehicles. And LG was also keen to show how the technology could work as part of an outfit – by putting Adobe’s “digital dress” be ashamed.

Indeed, weird and wonderful display technology is becoming commonplace when it comes to LG. This is the same company that gave us a Television in a caseA rollable phoneand a screen which is both flat and curved.
