Pair of late penalties cost Stanford 22nd card

STANFORD, Calif. (WAVE) – A run of 17 unanswered points, capped by a 52-yard field goal, gave the Stanford Cardinal a 38-35 victory over UofL on Saturday night.

This field goal by Stanford kicker Emmet Kenney was created by two Louisville penalties. First, an unsportsmanlike penalty on the Cardinals moved the Cardinal to midfield with just a second left. As Kenney lined up for a 57-yard attempt, Louisville jumped offside to give the junior five more yards to work with.

That day, the Cards committed 13 penalties for 101 yards compared to Stanford’s three for 30 yards.

Stanford started the game the way they finished it, a basket from Kenney to break a scoreless tie and give them a three-way lead in the first quarter. A little over a minute later, Emmett Mosley V caught a pass from quarterback Ashton Daniels for a 62-yard score to give the Cardinal a 10-0 lead.

Donald Chaney had a 1-yard run to close the gap, to close out the first, but Kenney kicked his second field goal to extend the lead again.

Then the Cards offense came alive.

Duke Watson had a five-yard touchdown run to give UofL its first lead of the night and Chris Bell caught a 10-yard pass from Tyler Shough to increase the lead to 21-13 before halftime.

Watson broke for a 68-yard touchdown run to give UofL a 28-13 lead midway through the third quarter before Stanford scored again, this time a 13-yard pass from Daniels to Elic Ayomanor. Daniels would keep it for the two-point conversion to cut the lead to a touchdown.

But it was Watson again with a five-yard score to extend the lead to 35-21 early in the fourth. That was the last time UofL scored.

Mosley got his second touchdown, this time a four-yarder from Daniels to cut the lead to seven again. Then he caught his third touchdown, this one a 25-yarder from Justin Lamson to tie the game with 45 seconds left. END.

Kenney would complete the comeback with the 52-yarder as time expired to end Stanford’s six-game losing streak.

Shough finished with 270 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Watson totaled 117 yards and three touchdowns. Chris Bell and Ja’Corey Brooks both had nine catches on the night. Bell had 112 yards and a score while Brooks had 104 yards.

The Cards are back at home next week against Pitt.
