After firmly inserting himself into the NFL MVP race with 146 rushing yards and two touchdowns in the Philadelphia Eagles’ 26-18 win over the Washington Commanders on Thursday, Saquon Barkley is poised to gain more extra money thanks to his contract incentives.

By NFL Network Ian Rapoport and Mike GarafoloBarkley’s deal includes a $13.5 million base salary this season, plus an additional $3 million in individual and team incentives that are within his reach.

Here’s a look at the incentives contained in Barkley’s deal:

  • $250,000 for 1,500 combined rushing and receiving yards
  • $250,000 for 2,000 combined rushing and receiving yards
  • $500,000 for First Team All-Pro selection
  • $250,000 for second team All-Pro or Pro Bowl selection
  • $250,000 if the Eagles win the NFC Championship Game
  • $250,000 if the Eagles win the Super Bowl

Of those incentives, the 1,500 combined rushing and receiving yards appears to be a lock. Barkley already leads the NFL with 1,347 yards from scrimmage with seven games remaining.

At his current rate of 134.7 scrimmage yards per game, Barkley could reach 1,500 yards over the next two games. The 2,000 yard incentive is also within reach.

Barkley is on track to pass for 2,290 yards from scrimmage if he plays all 17 games. This would be the 11th highest total in a single season in NFL history.

Eagles general manager Howie Roseman broke from his usual method of team building to sign Barkley to a over three years, $37.8 million contract in free agency.

They had spent the second-lowest amount on running backs and accumulated the third-most rushing yards over a six-season span, from 2017-22, according to Ruben Frank from NBC Sports Philadelphia.

Barkley has been one of the main driving forces pushing the Eagles to the top of the NFC East and into the mix for the No. 1 seed in the entire conference. He’s a sure bet to earn one of the two spots on the All-Pro team and would likely be the first-team favorite at this point.

Given how well the Eagles are currently playing on both sides of the ball, it wouldn’t be surprising if Barkley also wins one of two incentives to reach the Super Bowl or win the Super Bowl.

Philadelphia has won six straight games with an offense and defense that rank in the top seven in points per game.

The MVP is a very difficult award to win for anyone who is not a quarterback. Adrian Peterson in 2012 was the last non-quarterback to be named MVP. Lamar Jackson is having another incredible season and looks set to win the award for a third time.

Barkley will have the opportunity to prove his MVP bona fides against Jackson when the Eagles and Baltimore Ravens play at M&T Bank Stadium on December 1.
