G20 summit in Brazil to discuss poverty and climate change

Leaders of the Group of 20 major economies are expected to begin discussions on global issues, such as poverty and climate change.

The two-day G20 summit opens Monday in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru, US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping were among the participants. They have just concluded their negotiations at the APEC summit in Lima, the Peruvian capital.

Leaders should discuss how to take action to combat hunger and poverty. They will also exchange their views on sustainable development, particularly measures against climate change.

Developing and emerging countries have been facing these challenges for many years.

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who will chair the summit, said Saturday that “it is time to tell the world what the Amazon wants.”

He also said that rich countries must help finance forest protection.

All eyes are on the ability of G20 countries, despite their different positions, to reach consensus on solutions to these global challenges.

The summit takes place two months before the inauguration of Donald Trump as president of the United States. He is seen as reluctant to take action on climate change and prefers bilateral negotiations.
