Kremlin responds to Erdoğan peace plan to freeze Ukraine war

Dmitry Peskov, spokesman for the Russian leader, commented on media reports on the peace plan proposed by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to end Russia’s war against Ukraine.

Details: Peskov said the proposals published by the media are unacceptable for Russia. “The idea of freezing the conflict along the front line is inherently unacceptable for the Russian side,” stressed the Kremlin spokesperson.

When asked whether Putin and Erdoğan had discussed such plans, Peskov denied.

“No, they did not discuss it. We took note of these publications, but at this stage we have no information about it and we do not know what they may refer to,” Peskov added.

Background:

  • Bloomberg said Erdoğan plans to present his peace plan for the Russia-Ukraine war at the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

  • Erdoğan’s proposals include freeze fighting on the current front lines and delay talks on Ukraine’s NATO membership for at least 10 years as a concession to Putin.

  • Recently, the Wall Street Journal reported that in the entourage of American President-elect Donald Trump, there would be an idea to keep his promise to “end the war quickly” by freezing the front lines along the current line, creating a demilitarized zone and imposing a 20-year moratorium on Ukraine’s membership in NATO.
