His red card at Wembley Stadium sparked the Republic of Ireland’s collapse against England in their final Nations League match.

Heimir Hallgrimsson’s side defended resolutely for 50 minutes and frustrated Lee Carsley’s Three Lions, but when the Celtic defender received a second yellow card for hitting Real Madrid’s Jude Bellingham – conceding a penalty in the process – this opened the floodgates for a beating.

The Republic of Ireland were already condemned to third place in Group B2, but Hallgrimsson said in his post-match press conference that some players had “given up” following Scales’ dismissal.
