EU foreign ministers discuss Ukraine, but no common position on lifting arms restrictions – World

BRUSSELS — European Union foreign ministers met in Brussels on Monday to mainly discuss the Ukraine issue, including U.S. President Joe Biden’s decision to allow kyiv to deploy long-range U.S. missiles for strikes in Russia.

Josep Borrell, the European Union’s high representative for foreign affairs and security policy, confirmed that Ukraine had received US authorization to strike up to 300 km deep into Russian territory.

He also said EU foreign ministers discussed military and financial support for Ukraine. But regarding the lifting of these restrictions, Borrell noted that EU countries have not developed a common position.

“Today in particular, no position has been taken on this. Each country makes its own decision,” Borrell said after the ministerial meeting.

Furthermore, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz reiterated on Monday his decision not to supply Ukraine with long-range Taurus missiles.

Additionally, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto called the White House’s approval of Ukraine’s use of long-range missiles supplied by the United States an “extremely dangerous” step that could worsen the conflict, according to a statement published Monday on Facebook.
