Call for volunteers to help increase opening hours at Stoke-on-Trent Library

Library bosses are hoping to recruit more volunteers in a bid to expand services in Stoke-on-Trent.

The city council said it wanted to increase the opening hours of its six public libraries and offer additional services.

Libraries already offer services such as book lending, IT equipment, digital support sessions and activities for children, families and adults.

Under the proposals, a book delivery service for people who struggle to leave their homes would be extended, and new services such as befriending would be introduced, the council said.

Libraries would be open an average of 185 hours per week, an increase from the current 148 hours per week.

Plans would involve reintroducing late-night opening, as well as opening City Central, Longton, Stoke and Tunstall libraries every Saturday.

Councilor Alastair Watson, cabinet member for the city council, said feedback from residents suggested people wanted to see libraries open for longer.

“With volunteers, libraries can do more and be more open,” he said.

“The city council could not only extend the opening hours of all its libraries, but also introduce additional services for families, as well as children and adults who may be suffering from loneliness or social isolation.”

Volunteers would help with customer service, digital support, inventory and events.

People are now invited to submit feedback on the projects and express interest in volunteering.
