Facing the media, at least, it’s probably just as well that Clarke doesn’t go too high or too low given that this isn’t the first time he’s been in this situation.

After the match in Warsaw, he said the dramatic victory was “just another step in the journey” as he eyes a third major tournament.

The former West Brom boss was the standout candidate when he was appointed in 2019 due to his excellent work at Kilmarnock.

But a difficult start to the term, which included two heavy defeats to Belgium and a four-goal loss to Russia, dampened optimism.

In the following months, however, an identity emerged following a move to a back three, with the bold selection of Scott McTominay on the right of defence.

It paid off as a nine-match unbeaten run followed, as did qualification for the delayed Euro 2020 final – Scotland’s first major tournament in more than two decades.
