Older Nest Cams are finally available in the Google Home app

Even if it’s not quite simple yet

Google has taken a big step toward making management of its smart home ecosystem less fragmented by expanding support for the Google Home app to Nest Cam IQ indoor And Outer IQ cameras.

This means that now, technically, you can manage all of your Nest Cams in one place.

Many Nest users have had trouble switching between two apps – Google Home and Nest – to view feeds from their cameras, depending on which models they have.

A scarecrow which also contributed to making me break my loyalty to the platform… I recently I ditched all my Nest Cams in favor of a Reolink setup.

This update, part of a public preview rolling out this week, means you can now transfer and manage all Nest Cams released as far back as 2015 (the original Nest Cam) directly in the Google Home app, eliminating the need to switch between Nest and Home apps.

The move is part of Google’s progressive efforts to unify its Nest and Home platforms.

Once transferred, you’ll be able to access camera settings, video history in Event and Timeline views, and live streams, all within the Home app.

The integration also enables automations, such as linking Nest cameras to other smart devices; consider turning on the lights automatically when the doorbell rings or shining a red light if motion is detected.

The Google Home app supports cross-platform functionality, allowing you to view your live streams on phones, tablets, TVs and the web via home.google.com.

If you own a Nest Hub Max, you can also now manage its built-in camera directly in the Home app.

However, unlike the Nest Cam IQ cameras, once the Hub Max is transferred, it cannot be reverted to the Nest app.

However, since this is Google Home, the setup isn’t completely seamless.

You will first need to join the public preview via the Google Home app or Home web portal.

If you’re already registered, you should see prompts in the Home app to guide you through the transfer process.

While the Nest app remains unchanged for now, Google has confirmed that only the Nest Protect Smoke Detector and Nest x Yale Smart Lock still rely exclusively on the Nest app, so there are still a few apps left to do if you use.
