Ten days and counting.

That’s when the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season officially ends, on November 30.

Of course, this does not mean that tropical storms or even hurricanes cannot develop after this date. It happened, but the chances drop sharply at the end of the month.

THE National Hurricane Center even stops posting twice a day tropical outlookalthough it resumes action if forecasters spot something we should know.

Now that this good news is behind us – or ahead of us – it is time to remind Florida residents that the combination of cold front and remnants of former Tropical Storm Sara could bring wind and rain to the state this week.

Here is the latest update from the NHC as of 7 a.m. on Tuesday, November 19:

Expected impacts on Florida following “Tropical Storm Sara”

AccuWeather forecasters said that while Sara may no longer be a tropical storm, it could still bring heavy rain to parts of the United States this week as a “tropical rain storm.”

THE cold front eastward movement across the United States is expected draws some of Sarah’s moisture to the north, increasing rain chances along the Gulf Coast through Tuesday evening, AccuWeather said. Landfall in Florida is likely Wednesday morning as a tropical rain storm.

Impacts specifically mentioned by AccuWeather include:

  • Rain: A broad band of rain of 2 to 4 inches could spread from eastern Louisiana to the Florida Panhandle, said AccuWeather senior hurricane expert Alex DaSilva.
    • Some areas could see up to 12 inches.
    • Heavy rain could spread southward along the Florida peninsula through midweek.
  • Thunderstorms: Risk of some violent thunderstorms. The most likely location for severe weather would be the Florida Peninsula.
  • Wind: Winds, gusting to 40 to 60 mph, are possible, but will most likely be confined to the coast and coincide with heavier showers, DaSilva said.
    • With stronger showers and thunderstorms, locally higher wind gusts in excess of 60 mph would be possible.
  • Tornadoes: Isolated tornadoes possible.
  • Return currents: There is a dangerous risk of rip currents along the Gulf Coast through Wednesday.

What else is there and how likely are they to strengthen?

There are currently no disturbances in the Atlantic basin, except for the remnants of former Tropical Storm Sara in the Gulf of Mexico. No tropical cyclones are expected over the next seven days, according to the National Hurricane Center.

The Atlantic Basin includes the northern Atlantic Ocean, the Caribbean Sea, and the Gulf of Mexico.

Countdown: When will hurricane season end?

The official Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, although tropical systems can develop at any time.

The Atlantic Basin includes the northern Atlantic Ocean, the Caribbean Sea, and the Gulf of Mexico.

Will Florida, USA experience another hurricane or tropical storm this year?

While a tropical or subtropical storm in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean is possible early Decemberany U.S. impacts from additional tropical storms or hurricanes are very unlikely for the rest of the year, DaSilva said.

As the cold front moves through Florida, it will “eventually put an end to any further risk of tropical activity threatens the continental United States this year,” said Dr. Ryan Truchelut, chief meteorologist at WeatherTiger. Truchelut is a Florida meteorologist who works with the USA TODAY Network.

“This will usher in temperatures with highs in the 60s and lows in the 40s for north and central Florida – Florida’s first taste of winter after a summery fall.”
