  • Packages of organic whole and baby carrots have been recalled at retailers nationwide due to potential E. coli contamination.

  • E. coli can cause serious and even fatal infections in young children, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems.

  • See below for a list of affected products.

As you prepare for Thanksgiving festivities, check the carrots you purchased for roasting turkey, making gravy, or caramelizing: The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and a reputable carrot supplier have issued a reminder of several brands of organic carrots (baby and whole) because of the potential E.coli contamination.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)carrots are potentially linked to an outbreak of E. coli in 18 states which, so far, has resulted in 15 hospitalizations and one death.

On November 16, Grimmway Farms recalled bags of vegetables shipped to retail stores in the United States, Puerto Rico and Canada. According to the FDA, the affected products should have already been removed from grocery store shelves, but they may still be in consumers’ refrigerators or freezers. So for peace of mind, you might want to rummage through the produce drawer.

The products concerned are:

  • Whole organic carrots, which do not have an expiration date printed on the bag, but were available for purchase from August 14 to October 23, 2024.

  • Small organic carrots with expiration dates from September 11 to November 12, 2024.

Affected brands include 365, Bunny Luv, Cal-Organic, Compliments, Full Circle, Good & Gather, GreenWise, Grimmway Farms, Marketside, Nature’s Promise, O Organics, President’s Choice, Raley’s, Simple Truth, Sprouts, Trader Joe’s, Wegmans and Healthy pantry.

The FDA is concerned that the above vegetables may have been contaminated with E. Coli, a bacteria that can cause serious and even fatal infections in young children, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems. Symptoms of E. coli usually occur three to four days after eating affected foods, depending on the Mayo Clinicand may include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, fever, nausea and/or vomiting.

If you think you have any of the affected carrots, the CDC and FDA recommend throwing them out and not eating them. The FDA also suggests disinfecting all surfaces touched by carrots if you suspect you have one of the affected vegetables. If you are concerned that you are or may become ill, the FDA advises you to contact a healthcare professional.
