Liverpool must resolve neglected contract dilemma after Mohamed Salah saga

Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold aren’t the only Liverpool players whose contracts expire in the not-too-distant future

In just 42 days, Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold will all be free to discuss pre-contract deals with foreign clubs as they enter the final six months of their Liverpool contracts. While discussions with the trio are reportedly ongoing, the Reds are clearly running out of time before the January 1 deadline.

Certainly, even if their future is not resolved in the new year, nothing can stop them. Liverpool to grant extensions with three of their star players. But negotiations would be somewhat complicated if rival clubs were then free to come to the table.

Naturally, the future of Salah, Van Dijk And Alexandre-Arnold are a hot and constant topic of conversation for those of the red persuasion.

During this period of success under Fenway Sports Group, where Liverpool won every major prize, whenever a player entered the final year of their contract, they mainly saw them move on.

The only exceptions are veterans James Milner and Adrian, as well as Divock Origi after his Champions League the exploits of 2019 earned him an extension.

Since 2018, Emre Can, Daniel Sturridge, Alberto Moreno, Adam LallanaNathaniel Clyne, Gini Wijnaldum, Origi, Milner, Roberto Firmino, Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Adrian, Joel Matip and Thiago Alcantara have all left the Reds when their contracts expired.

Although impending exits were obvious to some, the majority endured a year of public uncertainty before their future was resolved.

Certainly, there is a difference between each of the names mentioned above and Salah, Van Dijk and Alexander-Arnold: the three current out-of-contract Liverpool stars remain assured starters at Anfield.

While history has been favorable to the Reds’ decision not to renew the contracts of their previous departures, it would be a gamble if they lost three key lieutenants in one fell swoop.

Yet uncertainty over the futures of Salah, Van Dijk and Alexander-Arnold is perhaps distracting from other contract sagas that could be about to unfold at Anfield – with no one talking about them yet.

While they may be approaching the final six-month deadline, historically the alarm bells have started to ring when a player had two years left to run on their existing contract.

Three other senior Liverpool players are currently set to enter the final 12 months of their contracts next summer, while nine other players’ current contracts expire in 2027.

Andy Robertson, Caoimhin Kelleher And Ibrahima Konate will all end their contracts in 2026. And while the Reds are in talks with the French campthe future of the Scottish and Irish internationals is more uncertain.

Liverpool have been linked with a number of left-backs in recent months, it is clear that even if Robertson signs an extension, the Reds will need a long-term replacement for him sooner rather than later.

Meanwhile, Kelleher has been open about his desire to move on and be a first-choice keeper elsewhere, with Liverpool having rejected offers from Nottingham Forest last August and January. Even though those offers were considerably lower than the asking price, the Irishman’s market value will only drop in the coming months as he enters the final year of his contract.

Elsewhere, according to transfer market, Alisson Becker, Joe Gomez, Wataru Endo, Luis Diaz, Curtis Jones, Harvey Elliott, Diogo Jota, Kostas Tsimikas and Conor Bradley are all expected to be out of contract in 2027.

It would perhaps be a surprise to see Endo, already 31, offered an extension, especially since he is already linked with a departure and was the subject of a rejected offer from Marseille on last summer.

Meanwhile, the impending arrival of Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia next year has already sparked speculation over Alisson’s long-term future. And uncertainty over Gomez’s future persists after his move to Newcastle United collapsed last summer.

But new deals for Jones, Elliott and Bradley at least, as three of the youngest members of Slot’s first team, will perhaps begin to be considered once they enter the final two years of their existing deals.

Liverpool already have three rather egregious contract sagas to resolve in the coming weeks and months. But whatever the outcome, it’s only the beginning, as only six of Slot’s current upper echelons have committed to the club beyond 2027.
