Forget SEC Bias, All Four Big Ten Teams in the Top 5 of the CFP Rankings Are Just Wrong

The last CFP rankings are there, and there are, as one would expect, problems all over the world. First of all, SEC bias is alive and well. Eight of the top 25 teams reside in the SEC, including four among the top 10 teams.

Apparently, a second loss in three games wasn’t enough to knock Missouri out of the top 25. Miami somehow moved up to 8th place despite losing their last game before their bye week. There are many reasons to frustrate fans.

That being said, as clear as the SEC’s bias is, the Big Ten’s bias cannot be ignored. The SEC may have four teams in the top 10, but the Big Ten has four of the top five teams. The Oregon Ducks, Ohio State Buckeyes, Penn State Nittany Lions and Indiana Hoosiers are all ranked in the top five, with the Texas Longhorns being the only non-Big 10 team in the top five. This just seems wrong.

The committee says four of the top five teams in the country reside in the Big Ten. With that, you can miss me and the rest of the college football community.

While some parts of the rankings show obvious SEC bias, others do not. FPI Strength of ESPN Program Rankings would suggest that there is bias against the SEC and for the Big Ten.

For example, Georgia is at the top of the list. Georgia has suffered some frustrating losses and deserves to be docked for that, but they also just beat Tennessee by two scores. In addition to this victory, Georgia has a dominant victory at Texas on its resume, and it also annihilated Clemson. Yet, despite their busy schedule and rather solid CV, four Big Ten teams are ahead of them?

When comparing Georgia’s resume to Penn State and Indiana, it doesn’t seem close. Penn State ranks 35th on this list and Indiana is 106th. In the general FPI rankingGeorgia ranks fifth, Penn State seventh and Indiana 11th. This shouldn’t be the end all be all, but this too should not be ignored.

Yes, Indiana is undefeated and Penn State’s only loss came to the No. 2 team in the rankings by a single score, but that seems too much for four of the top five teams to be Big Ten teams when the conference as a whole looks remarkably unimpressive. If teams like Indiana and Penn State had played in the SEC, it’s easy to wonder if they would still be undefeated.
