Windows 11 gets an AI boost with Microsoft 365 Companions and improved search

What just happened? Microsoft unveiled two significant updates to Windows 11 at its annual Ignite conference in 2024, using advanced AI integration to improve the user experience. The new features are designed to improve search and simplify everyday tasks. These announcements reflect Redmond’s ongoing efforts to integrate AI technologies into Windows 11. As these features develop, they should provide users with a more intuitive and efficient computing experience.

One of the announced features is Microsoft 365 Companions for Windows 11, which was introduced by Windows chief Pavan Davuluri.

Microsoft 365 Companions is a new taskbar feature that integrates contacts, files, and calendar appointments from Microsoft 365. This feature allows users to access key information with just one click. It is very similar to the Phone Link app companion experience introduced in the Windows 11 24H2 update, where users can see recent messages and calls as well as the phone’s battery life alongside the menu Get started without having to open the phone. Link app.

Although not all details of Microsoft 365 Companions have been fully disclosed, the preview shown on Ignite featured a floating contacts panel, reminiscent of Microsoft Teams’ previous integration in the taskbar. This approach to information access could potentially extend beyond Microsoft’s own apps, although it remains unclear whether third-party developers will have the ability to integrate their apps into this new taskbar experience .

In a parallel announcement, Microsoft revealed plans to leverage Neural Processing Units (NPUs) in Copilot+ laptops and other compatible hardware for overfeed Windows 11’s built-in search capabilities. This improvement will extend to the broader Windows Search feature in the Start menu, as well as more specific searches in File Explorer and Settings.

The improved search functionality will change the way users locate files on their devices. Microsoft says users will be able to find documents and photos without needing to remember the exact file names or contents. Instead, they can describe the content or use synonyms to locate the desired files. It is important to note that this feature will work locally, eliminating the need for an internet connection.

One of the most intriguing aspects of this update is the ability to search by image content, including any text found in images. This feature could be useful for users who frequently save photos or screenshots of documents for future reference.

Microsoft has planned the deployment of these features for early 2025, with machines equipped with Snapdragon benefiting from first access via the Windows Insider program.
