Lisa Frank Company’s Dark Drama, Subject of New Documentary (Exclusive)

Kids who grew up in the ’90s fondly remember Lisa Frank for her rainbow-colored products, cute characters, and lots of personality.

While the businesswoman and creator worked hard to make this world a reality, the truth was much darker. In Prime Video Glitter and greed: the story of Lisa FrankFrank’s employees and loved ones – including her ex-husband and former business partner James Green and son Hunter Green – detail a world far different from its glittery exterior.

The trailer for the documentary, shared exclusively with PEOPLE, shows a number of people discussing their experiences behind the scenes.

Although the brand is billed as “the perfect company” and “the cutest thing you’ve ever seen,” one contributor notes, “It wasn’t all rainbows and unicorns.”

“The story of Lisa Frank and the company is so different from the products she created. There are scandals, greed, legal battles…” explains journalist Tracie Egan Morrissey.

The woman behind the technicolor, animal print, and neon designs that were beloved throughout the ’80s and ’90s was also very different from what many fans imagined. Frank, who turns 70 next year, is featured in the series but declined to participate further.

A creator is seen saying in the trailer: “I feel like Lisa Frank ruined my life.”

In speaking with PEOPLE about the documentary, executive producers Mary Robertson and Arianna LaPenne elaborate on this point of view.

“There was an initial sense of what people might have experienced. But it was so much deeper and it was like we were going down the rabbit hole of this fascinating world,” shares LaPenne.

“I would say that each of these people remembers their experience very well. Life is complicated and their experiences were complicated, but they were definitely meaningful and important to them.”

“I think there’s a rich human drama at the center of it all that so many people can relate to,” adds Robertson.

“This project is all about being an artist – the rewards it gives and what it takes away from you as a human being. It’s all about authorship and knowing who can claim what we think we are entitled to,” she continues.

“It’s about Americans’ relationship with their work. Many people who appeared in the film felt that what they did and accomplished while working at Lisa Frank was the greatest achievement of their lives and also felt a feeling of regret for having given as much as they did for this company at that time So they lived both truths, and these can be seen.

The four-part documentary series “enters the neon-colored world of Lisa Frank Inc., a brand that defined childhood for a generation of Americans only to disappear overnight,” according to Amazon MGM Studios. The in-depth analysis includes more than 20 insider interviews and tons of never-before-seen footage surrounding the brand.
