Jameis Winston’s pregame speech: From ‘Eat a W’ quotes to ‘No decal’, how Browns QB fired up his teams

Jameis Winston is one of the greatest orators in football. The Browns QB is also a bohemian – he not only has a howitzer on his right arm, but also the gift of gab. Often, it’s his voice that attracts the most attention.

Winston is a microphone expert. When Florida State won the national championship as a redshirt freshman, Winston stood atop the pulpit and gave a speech that would leave politicians in awe.

“I said, guys, we didn’t come here for no reason,” Winston said. “I said, guys, it’s on us, man. All the adversity that we went through in the first quarters, it was on us to take. And like I said, we control our own destiny.

And these men looked me in the eye and they said, “We have this, Jameis. And I said. . . we said. . . I said, ‘Are you strong?’ They said, “I am strong if you are strong.” » I said, ‘We are strong, then.'”

Winston has only increased this reputation during his professional career. The Cleveland starter has left a trail of gems in his wake since his NFL debut in 2015.

With that, here are some of Winston’s catchiest phrases, from “Eat a W” to “no decal” and everything in between.

Jameis Winston’s pre-game speech

Jameis Winston has a long history of serving up quotes to the general public, showcasing a mastery of vocabulary eerily reminiscent of Marilyn Robinson and Stephen King.

Here are some of his best soundbites over the years:

Winston eats the “W”

Winston’s most famous pregame talks took place in 2017. The golden-armed pitcher, then a member of the Buccaneers, delivered quite a homily before Tampa’s road showdown with division rival, New Orleans.

“I want to say one thing,” Winston announced.

He began sucking on his fingers, which were positioned in a shape vaguely resembling a W shape.

“Let’s eat one,” Winston proclaimed. “I want to eat a W tonight.”

This did not go down well with members of the Buccaneers roster.

“I looked and I was like, ‘Dog, what are you doing?'” former Bucs defensive end Gerald McCoy said during an appearance on “25/10 Show” Podcast by LeSean McCoy and DeSean Jackson. “I remember (former Bucs TE) Cam Brate said, ‘Come on Gerald, he’s our quarterback.’

I said, “Shut up, I don’t care.” What are you talking about? Why is he doing this? »

The Buccaneers would lose the game 30-10.

“I think it went away when I started eating W,” Winston said on the Podcast “Forgive my opinion”.

Jameis sings a sonnet

Winston’s quotes can seem almost Shakespearean at times, and just like renowned bards like Edgar Allan Poe, Walt Whitman, and Emily Dickinson, Winston also has his own style.

He delivered an Edward Lear-style limerick before a Bucs preseason game in 2017.

The debauchery goes like this:

One, two, three and up to four.

The Bucs, Q and C come out this door.

Now we don’t know how to make these rhymes.

We know about pancake blocks and throwing tokens.

Now is the time for us to compete.

Now we have to do it in one direction, one team, one heartbeat.

Let’s go out here and have a nice day,

And let’s kick Jag’s ass, Tampa Bay.

“We don’t have a sticker”

It’s hard to give up old habits. Winston joined the Browns ahead of the 2024 season, after spending the previous four seasons with the Saints. He joined a camp that rejects players by using a sticker on his helmet.

That didn’t stop the Florida State alum from calling out the franchise’s potential design before his first start.

“Opportunities come once in a lifetime” Winston hummed. “And with these opportunities, we have to make the most of them. Each of us has an individual responsibility to go out there and fight for each other.

Represent the names on your back, represent the names that are on your helmet. »

Winston quickly realized his mistake, changing his statement almost as soon as it left his lips.

“Well, we don’t have a sticker,” Winston said. “So, represent the Browns. One piece at a time. Together.”

“Eyes have not seen, ears have not heard”

The Browns have had few highlights in this campaign. They did, however, pull off a momentous 29-24 win over the Ravens in Week 8.

Winston was the hero of the game, finding Cedric Tillman with a 38-yard strike in the final moments of the game to defeat Baltimore. Winston completed 27 of 41 passes for 334 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions against the Ravens. He also delivered one of his vaunted sermons before the competition. Coincidence? I don’t think so.

“Eyes have not seen, ears have not heard, what the Lord has obtained for the Cleveland Browns,” Winston said.

“We don’t need to see instant gratification! We don’t need to see something good happen for us! You have to believe it! We must have this unwavering faith, and I get it! You have an opportunity! You guys have an opportunity to make the most of it, and I believe in my crew. »
