Florida man sues Netflix over streaming issues during ‘unwatchable’ match between Mike Tyson and Jake Paul

Netflix faces class action lawsuit trial of a Florida subscriber unhappy with “Unwatchable” livestream of the Jake Paul And Mike Tyson boxing match.

Ronald Denton of Hillsborough County filed a lawsuit Monday in Florida state court, seeking unspecified damages on behalf of consumers affected by the constant technical glitches during the stream.

The match ended with YouTuber Paul, 27 years oldknocking out heavyweight boxing legend Tyson, 58, with a score 80-72, 79-73, 79-73. The fight of eight two-minute rounds was Tyson’s first professional contest since the boxer retired in 2005, although he did box Roy Jones Jr in an exhibition match in 2020.

He has been touted as one of the greatest and most controversial fights of all timebut several subscribers complained on social networks Buffering issues on Netflix, which streamed it.

Benton’s suit alleges a breach of contract by Netflix as well as violations of Florida state laws regarding deceptive trade practices and consumer protection. The streaming giant, he claims, was “woefully ill-prepared” to broadcast the match.

“Sixty million Americans were eager to see “Iron” Mike Tyson, “the baddest man on the planet,” against Jake Paul, the YouTuber-turned-winner. What they saw was ‘the nastiest streaming on the planet,'” the lawsuit states, according to The United States today.

“Boxing fans, as well as average Americans wanting to see a legend in what would most likely be his final fight, have been faced with legendary issues, including lack of access, streaming issues, and upload issues buffered,” he adds.

“Netflix customers have experienced huge streaming issues and should have known better because this has happened before. Instead of delivering the shows its viewers pay for every month, Netflix was completely unprepared and unable to fix the problems.

The match’s commentary team was also plagued by audio issues, with Evander Holyfield appearing unable to hear presenter Kate Abdo through his earpiece. Jerry Jones had to borrow Michael Irvin’s microphone after his bankruptcy.

The fight took place in front of 70,000 fans at AT&T Stadium, home of the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys, and in front of millions of television viewers at home. According to U.S. viewing figures from analytics firm TVision and proprietary data from Netflix, around 108 million people watched the fight worldwide.

Many fans and viewers were disappointed by a fight described as “sad”, with Paul later admitting he “didn’t want to hurt anyone who didn’t need to be hurt” and Tyson revealing that he “almost died in June” after a health problem which led to the postponement of the fight.

In April last year, Netflix has chosen to host the season four reunion of love is blind live, but struggled with technical issues that caused fans to wait at least an hour for it to begin.

The Independent has contacted Netflix for comment.
