How to enable a dark theme in Edge

If you set system accent colors in Windows, whether you select “Dark” or “System Default,” Edge will use those for the title bar and window frame. So you have two options if you want Edge to use dark mode completely.

One way to fix this is also to enable a dark theme in Edge (which is different from dark mode.) To do this, stay on the Edge Appearance page. Under Theme, click “Choose Color,” set the color picker to a dark color, and then click “Apply.” You can also use a predefined dark theme from the list, like “Dark & Stormy”.

How to force a dark theme on all websites

Some websites (like How-To Geek) will obey your browser’s dark theme and change their theme accordingly, but many don’t. However, since Edge is based on Chromium, it contains the same experimental features. “Force dark mode” option found in Google Chrome.

To enable it, first type “edge://flags/#enable-force-dark” into Edge’s address bar and press Enter.

Next to Auto Dark Mode for Web Content, use the drop-down list and select “On.”

When you’re done, click “Restart” at the bottom. Edge will close all your browser windows and reopen them. You won’t lose your open tabs, but make sure you have saved any work (such as data entered into forms) on web pages before continuing.
