8 Rules You Didn’t Know Kansas City Chiefs Players Must Follow

After back-to-back Super Bowl victories in 2023 and 2024, the Kansas City Chiefs look to make NFL history this season as the first team to win three consecutive championships.

But the most dominant team in the league in recent years, led by Travis Kelce, Patrick Mahomes and head coach Andy Reid – know that they cannot achieve this unprecedented streak without fully committing to their well-known work ethic.

That includes following the rules established by the NFL and the Chiefs organization – including a particularly confusing rule put in place by Reid.

Here are 10 rules Chiefs players must follow that you might not have known:

Players have a curfew of 11 p.m. the day before matches

The day before matches – home and away – players are required to respect a curfew. Shariah Gordonwhose fiancé is Chiefs wide receiver Mecole Hardman Jr., told PEOPLE: “Yes, they have a curfew. Every game they have to be there by 11:00.”

Players from other NFL teams have spoken out about the league’s curfew in previous years. A former Dallas Cowboys player said the organization implemented a midnight curfew for the night before games, while Sterling Shepard of the New York Giants told the New York Times last year their curfew was usually set at 10 p.m.

According to the NFL collective agreement“Any material breach of the club’s match day curfew may be considered conduct detrimental to the club upon the player’s first offence.”

“It’s not impossible to stay in the same room,” Gordon said.

Extended downtime on the road may seem like an opportune time for players to enjoy luxury dining and nightlife in away cities, but players are strictly prohibited from consuming alcohol during the day before a match.

“It’s a tight ship here,” Gordon said, revealing that it’s often the players’ wives and girlfriends who take advantage of the host city.

“But girls, we get together. We’re like, ‘Hey, do you want to have dinner? Are we going to go out? What do you want to do?’ So we celebrate for them.”

Regardless of their loved ones’ travel plans after a game, Chiefs players must travel to and from their away games with the team. “They leave on their own,” Jayla Thornton-Cook, wife of Chiefs security Bryan Cook, told PEOPLE.

“You’re more than welcome to come to a game and you can see them afterward, and then they get right back on the plane and go home that night,” said Thornton-Cook, a former basketball player. player at George Washington University.

Although players and teams are required to follow the official NFL Code of Conduct, each team may enforce its own rules on players.

In October, defensive tackle Chris Jones told Rich Eisen that there are “little things we track” that are specific to the Chiefs organization. “For example, something as simple as we don’t wear black cleats.”

Jones, 30, said he didn’t know why this particular dress code regulation was enforced. “Look, I don’t know…I just work here,” Jones told Eisen, adding, “I don’t make the rules.”

Players must be on time for team events and being late, even by just one minute, can result in a fine.

In 2023, Todd Archer, ESPN NFL reporter said“According to the CBA, unexcused lateness or absence from training camp by a contracted player is subject to a fine of $50,000 per day.”

Additionally, Archer noted that these fines “should not be reduced in amount or waived by the team” although teams have “ultimately” waived player fines during past resistances.
