Driver sentenced to more than eight years in prison after hitting youth

The driver was sentenced to more than eight years in prison after hitting the youngster with his red BMW.

Other drivers heard “aggressive roars” coming from the driver, Shazad Alam, 34, who was traveling at 100 km/h at the point of impact, 22 km/h above the speed limit.

Alam weaved through traffic and used the bus lane to attack other drivers before hitting the schoolboy.

He admitted causing death by dangerous driving and Birmingham Crown Court was told he had been banned from driving twice previously.

The resident of Lowesmoor Road, Sheldon, was sentenced to eight years and nine months, and will serve two thirds of his time in custody.

He was also banned from driving for seven years from his release.

Judge Kristina Montgomery KC found the collision occurred after Alam was “irrigated” by slow-moving traffic.

A witness heard “aggressive revving and acceleration” while another driver observed Alam driving through it just before the crash.

Motorists claimed the speeder “ran over” him and Azaan was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 12-year-old’s mother, Zoe Homer, raced to the scene while she was 35 weeks pregnant at the time and told the court he was “completely and utterly broken”.

She said: “I didn’t just lose Azaan, I lost the future I thought we had together. I lost everything myself.”
