Riot calls out ‘disrespectful’ use of Netflix’s AI on League of Legends’ Arcane screen

It seems that Netflix has chosen to use AI artistic tools to expand. EsotericThe base images of to better fit the television’s resolution, causing severe backlash from fans online. In response, Riot Games Music brand manager Alex “Astryx” Shahmiri called the decision “disrespectful,” confirming that the extended artwork has been removed from the game. The image, which depicts a maniacal Jinx kissing a frightened Vi, appears as a screensaver when you hover over the show’s listing. In an attempt to expand its resolution to fit TV dimensions, Netflix appears to have used an AI art tool, which, eagle-eyed, League of Legends fans spotted on November 21.

When sharpening Jinx’s hand specifically, her little finger is completely blurred and the arm itself looks oddly out of proportion. “Netflix using AI to stretch a poster for Arcane of all shows is so disappointing and disrespectful,” the post read.

In a written response hours later, Shahmiri wrote: “Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We have a strict stance: no AI for anything Arcane, as it’s disrespectful to the incredible artists who worked on the series.

“This image was an error and has since been removed. (Thank you) once again for exposing him. At the time of writing this article, I am not seeing the image on the UK Netflix app.

An X comment from Riot Games' music head discussing Netflix's use of AI art to expand Arcane's screensaver

This follows a controversy job offer on the Riot Games website for a “Research Scientist Intern – Generative AI”. Focusing on using generative systems to “inform decisions, develop robust research prototypes, and inform data-powered products,” the work was immediately criticized. In 2024 alone, Riot Games has seen two rounds of layoffsthe latter eliminating many jobs focused on creation.

Some were quick to draw parallels between this incident and the new job posting, prompting one fan to ask Shahmiri about Riot’s AI plans. “I can only talk about what I’m working on. From a purely personal point of view, I am not a fan of AI, because what makes art so special is human connection and feelings,” he writes.

“Whether it’s through art, music, or any other creative medium, this is something I never want to see replaced by AI.”
