Huntsville leaders aim to expand Big Spring Park

HUNTSVILLE, AlabamaWAF) – Big Spring Park is going to look a little different in the months and years to come.

Huntsville city leaders are considering what to do with additional park space once Old City Hall is demolished.

City leaders said several new features would be added to the park once demolition is complete.

City of Huntsville General Services Director Ricky Wilkinson said once Old City Hall is demolished, the space will give people another place to gather and relax.

Wilkinson said that right now, the project design is about 60 percent complete.

City leaders plan to add a large pavilion to the area as well as general plazas for gatherings.

There’s another cool feature that Wilkinson says is also in the works.

“The conceptual design currently includes a portion of the park with a sidewalk similar to that of Lombard Street in San Francisco,” Wilkinson said. “The idea is that we would have several pieces of art placed along this sidewalk. So, you would pass from one piece of art to another as you venture from Church Street to the Fountain Circle Plaza area.

Part of this area will also be used to host larger community events in the park.

“It allows for increased programming,” Wilkinson said. “So if you think about the garland trail that they’re putting up at the moment, the array, or just future events at Big Spring Park East. This leaves more space for these potential activities to expand into this area. So I think it will be a huge benefit to downtown, and certainly to Big Spring Park.

The City Council recently awarded the contract to demolish the Old City Hall to Brit Demolition.

Wilkinson expects the demolition project to take eight months.

City leaders hope the entire project will be completed by fall 2026.
