Air India partners with BACL to establish aviation maintenance engineering facility

Tata property Air India has signed an agreement with Bengaluru Airport City Limited (BACL), a subsidiary of Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), to establish an Aviation Maintenance Engineering (AME) facility. The 86,000 sq ft campus, located in the airport city of Bengaluru, is expected to become operational by mid-2026.

“The Basic Maintenance Training Organization will establish a pool of qualified engineers trained to Air India standards from the outset,” said Sunil Bhaskaran, Director, Air India Aviation Academy.

The agreement is part of Air India’s plans to establish a Basic Maintenance Training Organization (BMTO) to offer an integrated Aviation Maintenance Engineering (AME) program certified by the Directorate General of Air India. Civil Aviation Authority (DGCA) of the Indian aviation regulator.

The program is designed to meet Air India’s growing fleet maintenance needs.

Transition path

Air India’s BMTO is a step towards building a robust and future-ready aviation ecosystem in India. It will serve the airline’s ambitions as it moves forward on its transformation journey, strengthening the availability of aircraft maintenance engineers as Air India expands its fleet, thereby making it self-sustaining, the company said in a press release.

Rao Munukutla, Executive Director and CEO, BACL, said, “Air India’s BMTO reinforces our vision of developing a thriving ecosystem that drives innovation and collaboration. »

Recently, Air India, under its Vihaan AI program, saw the commitment of over 500 new aircraft, with deliveries already underway. Other key announcements include a $400 million interior renovation program for its older fleet and the insourcing of line maintenance operations across its group airlines to boost autonomy. In September 2024, Air India Group also started building a mega MRO facility in Bangalore.
