In the battle for the 288-seat Maharashtra Assembly, there have been several closely fought by-battles. The key issue was the battle for Shiv Sena’s legacy, with Eknath Shinde’s faction on one side and Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray’s faction on the other. While the Shinde faction retained the party’s iconic bow and arrow symbol as well as the original name, the second faction was assigned a mashaal (flaming torch) and bears the name Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb-Thackeray.)

The constituency attracted a lot of attention before the elections due to the triangular electoral fight between the Shiv Sena (UBT), Shiv Sena and the MNS candidate. Mahim, a stronghold of the Sena since 1990 and briefly held between 2009 and 2014 by the MNS, is at the center of attention while the BJP had expressed a desire to support Mr. Thackeray before the elections.
