School kitchen staff pay unacceptable wages, says Lisburn headteacher

A unit supervisor told BBC News NI the new pay review made her feel “very underestimated”.

She said that while she doesn’t want to diminish the work of cooks, unit supervisors have more responsibilities in the kitchen.

“We believe there has been no consultation with us regarding the changes,” she said.

“We were able to vote but the unions did not respond to our feelings.”

Another unit supervisor said she had seen “a lot of changes” in her work over the years.

“Additional red tape, many with very little clear training, understaffing, not being able to depend on orders coming in, maintenance not being done, the list goes on,” he said. she explained.

“We are pulling out all the stops and continuing to feed the children.

“We don’t ask for much, just that we are paid fairly and recognized for what we do.”
