‘Existing runway to be extended’: Nigerian airport to close due to Christmas travel plans

The temporary closure of Danbaba Suntai Airport in the state capital of Jalingo was announced by the Taraba State Ministry of Transport Development.

The statement was made on Friday by Yakubu Yakubu, the Commissioner for Transport Development, in a statement signed by Kwantar Genesis, the permanent secretary of the ministry.

According to him, the judgment is consistent with Nigerian Civil Aviation Authorityauthorization.

He said the airport’s ongoing modernization projects, which began in January 2024, will be made possible by the closure, which is expected to extend until December 20, 2024.

“These improvements include the construction of drainage systems, perimeter fencing, installation of an instrument landing system, rehabilitation of the existing runway to extend its length from 2.4 km to 3 km and acquisition two new fire trucks.” The statement read.

According to the commissioner in a Daily Post report, the program is part of the state government’s efforts to improve the airport infrastructure and air transport services for the residents of Taraba and those of neighboring states.

He urged travelers to be patient while repairs are underway, as flight operations are expected to resume once the work is completed.

This comes as Nigerians plan to travel across different locations for the Christmas and New Year’s holidays.
