City Power customers confident they will meet prepaid meter upgrade deadline

JOHANNESBURG – City Power said it remains confident that all its customers in Johannesburg will meet the deadline for upgrading electricity meter boxes.

South Africans who use prepaid electricity have until midnight on Sunday to upgrade their meters.

Many customers continue to rush to Eskom and municipality offices to ensure their systems are upgraded.

Residents across South Africa have been advised to purchase tokens from legal sellers, which will automatically help them upgrade their current meters.

Isaac Mangena, spokesperson for City Power:

“More than 99% of our prepaid automatic meters have been duly upgraded, and only a handful of this category of customers are still awaiting upgrades. Of these exceptional customers, 441 are in Alexandra, where our technicians have faced some pushback. The deadline is approaching and the suspension of penalty fees has led us to note an increase in the number of customers coming forward voluntarily. »

Meanwhile, City Power is appealing to Johannesburg residents living in complexes to ensure their electricity meter boxes are upgraded.

Many customers continue to rush to Eskom and municipality offices to ensure their systems are upgraded.

The city stressed that this upgrade is not the responsibility of the legal entity.

City Power appeals to sectional title holders to also ensure that they each upgrade the meters of their respective units, adding that the responsibility lies with the owners.

“We call on sectoral title holders to also ensure that they each upgrade the meters of their respective units…we have noticed that some customers who reside with customers whose body corporate will be responsible for upgrading the unit meters individual, this responsibility, unfortunately, belongs to the owners.”
