“Such a good life hack”

In the Northern Hemisphere, spring may seem far away, but it’s never too early to plan. A gardener has shown an amazing way to use an egg carton to help sow seeds.

The scoop

Tania (@jumping_bulb) is a homeowner and gardener who shares tips for growing your own food and running a farm. In one clip, they show how to use egg cartons in your garden to easily create holes for seeds.

To start, grab an old egg carton, preferably sturdy, as you’ll be applying some pressure. In a prepared garden bed or raised planter, simply press the egg carton into the soil to create a dozen small plugs.

Repeat this process wherever you plan to plant seeds. Tania plants radishes in the video and appears to cover about half of the raised bed with small clumps. Once you have created all of your holes, place a seed in each spot – some plants may require multiple seeds.

Next, cover your seeds with a layer of soil and gently press them to set them. The last step is to water everything well. Keep your garden moist and you should have seedlings in no time.

How it works

Any hack that simplifies the gardening process can help reduce our dependence on the grocery store and save money. The growing season may not last all year for everyone, but you can save hundreds of dollars during the summer if you have time and space to plant vegetables.

Even if you don’t have a lot of space, there are plenty of options you can expand on your counterIn window plantersor in a small porch containers.

Growing some of your food will not only save you money, but is also a healthy choice for you and your family. People who garden generally receive more fiber in their diet, and working in a garden plot is proven to benefit your mental health.

If you maintain a garden, you can take your eco-friendly choice a step further and start a compost pile. Composting can help reintroduce nutrients into your soil and can significantly reduce the amount of waste going to landfill.
