Eagles fill opening 53-man roster ahead of Clash Vs. Rams

PHILADELPHIA – Britain Covey is back. The Eagles added the wide receiver/punt returner to the roster Saturday, taking the open spot when defensive end Bryce Huff was placed on injured reserve following wrist surgery Thursday.

The Eagles also elevated tight end CJ Uzomah from the practice squad. This is Uzomah’s second elevation, giving him one more roster spot before the Eagles must decide whether to add him to the 53-man roster.

Uzomah will be the Eagles’ third tight end on Sunday night when they take on the Rams at SoFi Stadium.

The 21-day window for Covey to return earlier in the week after suffering a broken shoulder blade in a Week 3 win over the Saints.

“It’s good to have him back on the field,” said head coach Nick Sirianni. “I can’t stress enough how good his teammate Britain Covey is. And the guys love being around him, so it’s good to have him back in the mix and interacting with his teammates on the practice field.

There was some interaction, especially on Wednesday when Covey took his first shot in months. Cooper DeJean delivered.

“I got rid of it, I talked bullshit,” he said. “It’s good to be back. That’s the problem, I feel like I’m seen as the goofy little brother of the team, so all the defenders like to bullshit me. I just made it again, but mine doesn’t look very authentic.

Ovey said he was able to stay in shape, but he was glad the Eagles had a padded workout to get him back into the flow and show the Eagles brass he was ready to return.

“Luckily I’ve been able to run a lot,” he said, “so I feel in pretty good shape. I hit 22.8 miles per hour last week, so I feel pretty good .

Covey could be used as a receiver more than usual with DeVonta Smith already ruled out of Sunday night’s game with a hamstring injury. When it comes to his punt return duties, he could take a backseat to DeJean, who has done well in Covey’s absence. Still, Covey was one of the league’s best at returning punts before he was injured.

Sirianni was asked who would receive the call.

“Of course, we will always do what we think is best for our football team,” he said. “Coop did a very, very good job of turning the ball over in Great Britain’s absence. Great Britain did a great job and was one of the best players in the league at returning punts when he was a punt returner.

“Good problem to have. We will take everything into account and make the decision that is best for our football team.
