Trump, NATO chief meet, discuss global security issues

NATO says its Secretary General Mark Rutte met with US President-elect Donald Trump and discussed a range of global security issues facing the alliance.

Trump and Rutte reportedly met Friday in Palm Beach, Florida, where Trump resides. They reportedly discussed issues such as the situation in Ukraine.

The meeting drew attention because Trump repeatedly complained that many NATO allies rely on the United States for their defense and said he would review the alliance. It should require other members to increase their spending.

Separately, Reuters news agency reported Friday that Trump was considering creating a special envoy post to end the fighting during Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The report indicates that Trump may tap his aide Richard Grenell for the role. Grenell worked for the former Trump administration as ambassador to Germany and acting director of national intelligence.

He accompanied Trump during his talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in New York in September. If named special envoy, Grenell is expected to play a key role in negotiations for a ceasefire.
