England vs Japan: Steve Borthwick must win against Eddie Jones’ Brave Blossoms

Japan head coach Eddie Jones did not attend his pre-match press conference on Friday due to health reasons.

The former England boss was, however, well enough to return to Twickenham on Saturday as he finalized his side’s plans to inflict a damaging defeat on the hosts.

Japan arrive in London having beaten Uruguay 36-20 in their last outing and England prop Ellis Genge, who made his Test debut under Jones in 2016, said the Australian would relish the opportunity to bat his old team.

“I like this guy. He’s always been… not always actually, he hasn’t always been nice to me, but we have a good relationship,” Genge said.

“He has a perfect mastery of the psychological part of player development and man management.”

Jones’ leadership style was criticized in a book by former England scrum-half Danny Care, who claimed players were belittled and berated in a “toxic environment”.

The 64-year-old will face England at Twickenham for the first time since being sacked by the Rugby Football Union (RFU) in 2022.

Genge said: “Sometimes he’s wrong. There have been nightmare stories about him recently. But he’s a good guy. He’s a good guy.”

The 29-year-old in the front row added: “I can’t imagine he’ll be applauded when he goes on camera, but he’ll love that part. He’ll enjoy it.

“He will have excited them and you saw what he did with his Japanese team in 2015 who beat South Africa in Brighton.”
