Will the Cowboys’ victory over Washington save Mike McCarthy’s job?

Sunday, the Dallas Cowboys finally put an end to his five-game losing streak. Their Victory 34-26 on Washington’s commanders was also exciting because improbable. It also takes some heat off Mike McCarthy, at least for now.

Throughout this frustrating campaign, the Cowboys head coach has taken a lot of heat – and rightfully so. Even before losing Dak Prescott for the season, they underperformed and let too many opportunities slip through their fingers.

This was not the case on Sunday as they took advantage of everything they could. They finally won the turnover battle, with two goals kick returns for touchdownsand saw Rico Dowdle rack up 86 yards on the ground.

All this proved that when they play balanced football they can pose a threat. This also proves that Jerry Jones remains the #1 problem holding this franchise back.

Jones created a circus this offseason by waiting as long as possible to extend Prescott and CeeDee Lamb. He ensured the marquee wasn’t packed afterwards by forcing Mike McCarthy to start the season without an extension.

Not surprisingly, this led to a slow start from Prescott and Lamb. It also called into question McCarthy’s authority – which is never an ideal situation for a football team.

That being said, McCarthy’s professional status remains largely unchanged. Jones had made his decision when he didn’t extend McCarthy. Nothing short of a deep playoff run would lead to a sixth season for the veteran head coach.

Defeating Washington changes nothing. At most, it just means Jones won’t be forced to let him go until the end of the season.
