Tanners Turkeys Feed Hundreds on the Suncoast Before Thanksgiving

SARASOTA COUNTY, Fla. (WWSB) – Times have been tough for many people on the Suncoast after devastating hurricanes and storms. An organization helps feed hundreds of people this Thanksgiving.

Tanners Turkeys has been in business for 14 years. It was created by Michele Tanner, a local real estate agent and single mother.

The Good Samaritan started the organization to ensure that families in need will never go hungry this Thanksgiving.

“Doing something small for the families who were most affected by the flooding this year, I think it has a huge impact,” Michele Tanner said.

This year, the organization prepared 600 meals with the help of dozens of volunteers. One neighborhood they helped nurture was Laurel Meadows.

On Sunday and Monday, they passed by each house, dropping off free meals to those who returned to the community after Debby.

“We’re finding ways to get through this,” said David Wallace, a Laurel Meadows resident.

Wallace and his wife are rebuilding their house after it was badly damaged by Debby.

“We usually have Thanksgiving, but we just don’t have the space, or the house, or the hall to do it this year,” Wallace said.

Tanners Turkeys is still accepting donations, if you would like to support the organization click here.

After the Thanksgiving gift, Tanner and his daughter will travel to Siesta Key to hand out gift cards to restaurant employees who are out of work after the hurricane.
