Berkeley Co. executives discuss feasibility of ‘Hiker Biker’ trail in Ladson

LADSON, SC (WCSC) – The Limehouse Branch Canal is inside a large neighborhood along busy College Park Road. It is one of the remaining green spaces that has not been developed.

The neighborhood is also close to several schools and is home to young families.

Councilmember Tommy Newell is pushing for a “Hiker Biker” master plan that builds a 10-foot-wide asphalt path between College Park Road, Limehouse Branch and Royle Road. The trail would be approximately three miles.

The plan would allocate funds for parking areas, a pedestrian bridge and storm shelters near Sangaree. It would be modeled after similar trails near canals or rivers in other parts of the Lowcountry, including the Sawmill Branch in Summerville.

This effort would connect regular cyclists and pedestrians, neighbors and families taking children to and from schools. Newell mentioned that this effort dates back several years.

Newell requested $5 million from the state through Sen. Brian Adams. The state Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism offered $500,000.

“It’s a really beautiful place in the middle of an old neighborhood with great people. I think these wonderful people deserve something where they can walk around and listen to the wildlife and be at peace,” Newell said.

Berkeley County will discuss the feasibility of moving forward with the project at 6 p.m. The meeting will be held in the County Administration Building.
