Telford SMI aims to help farmers avoid big frost this winter

The Telford-based company has designed a range of covers to protect containers that store diesel exhaust fluid, also known as AdBlue, from the ravages of winter.

The liquid is used to reduce harmful emissions from diesel engines, widely used in the agricultural sector, ensuring their compliance with environmental regulations.

But AdBlue will start to crystallize or freeze when temperatures drop.

SMI’s range of covers, using its award-winning Tempro® thermal insulation, prevent AdBlue from freezing, saving farmers time, inconvenience and money.

“As soon as temperatures start to drop below 0°C, the fluid begins to freeze, which can clog machinery and prevent agricultural vehicles from starting,” said Jill Seymour, managing director of SMI.

“Worse still, if crystallized AdBlue enters an engine it can cause significant damage or even breakdowns, which could cost tens of thousands of euros in repair bills and lost business. »

A study carried out by the European transport and crane association ESTA reveals an increase in reports of engine failures in the heavy transport sectors caused by the use of AdBlue which is not in ideal condition. Officials describe it as “a serious issue with significant security implications.”

Tempro®, SMI’s innovative lightweight thermal insulation material, has been scientifically proven by UK-based testing centers to reduce energy loss by up to 60 percent.

It is used across a wide range of sectors, from supermarket cold rooms to food transport fleets, NHS blood banks, military and chemical installations.

Tempro® was also the first choice of intrepid explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes during his expedition to the South Pole, where he relied on it to protect his living quarters, tractors and portable laboratories from extreme temperatures.

Jill added: “Our products place a protective screen around AdBlue containers to help them maintain a consistent temperature. They provide protection not only against extreme cold conditions, but also against heat waves.

“We can produce bespoke covers for farmers to any specification, produced in our manufacturing unit at our Telford head office.”
