Dereham center to tackle health problems could ‘change lives’

Staff from Norfolk and Waveney Mind will be based in the new offices, alongside Citizens Advice and the Department for Work and Pensions.

Nick Francis, chairman of Norfolk and Waveney Mind, said mental health problems were caused by a variety of issues.

“Poor physical health, not working, financial difficulties, relationship difficulties can often trigger a mental health crisis,” he said.

“So by trying to support people at an earlier stage and defuse some of these issues, we can help them manage their mental health and let them live the life they want.”

The service will initially be by referral, but it is hoped it can be opened up to people once the system is established.

Steve James, executive director of Breckland Council who helped create the project, said: “Sometimes when people find themselves in a difficult situation, some react, quite rightly, by burying their heads in the sand and hoping the problems go away.

“That’s not the case, they’re just getting bigger,” he said. “And when people find the courage to come and talk to someone, we just want to make sure that we’re able to try to deal with as many of these issues at the same time.”
