The few remaining rivals to the Mazda3 include the Audi A3 sedan, Mercedes Class A Sedan And BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe. Interestingly, most of the Mazda3 Sedan’s main rivals have been discontinued, making it the most affordable of the few family hatchbacks on sale. THE Hyundai i30 Fastback is another contender in a similar price range, although it still retains a hatchback trunk and at the time of writing is no longer available to configure.

As of 2024, the Mazda3 Sedan range is incredibly simple and you don’t get the same range of options as with the more popular hatchback model. It is available only in mid-to-high specification Exclusive-Line trim and with only the 183hp 2.0-litre e-SkyActiv X engine with a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. It’s our pick of the range, though, so we’re glad it’s the one that sticks for the sedan.

One of the real appeals of the Mazda3 Sedan is the way it drives. We think it’s just behind the Mazda3 Sedan. BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe in this department, although there’s obviously no ‘hot’ version like the 2 Series range. While all 2 Series Gran Coupe models now come with an automatic gearbox, the Mazda3 Sedan is at least still offered in a manual version, which will please some passionate drivers.

As a result, the Mazda 3 Sedan is well equipped, with 18-inch alloy wheels, heated front seats, a Bose surround sound system, front and rear parking sensors, tinted windows and keyless entry. It’s perhaps a little disappointing that there’s no leather or faux leather trim option for the sedan, so it’s less customizable than its premium German rivals, although admittedly The Mazda3 Sedan is still a better equipped package for the price of an entry-level BMW. Series 2 Gran Coupe.

The fit and finish of the Mazda3 is truly excellent and much better than one would expect given that Mazda is not traditionally considered a “premium” brand. Safety is impressive, with the Mazda3 achieving the maximum five-star rating in independent crash tests carried out by Euro NCAP. The car will also automatically brake if it detects an obstacle on the road and you take no action.

With stylish looks, good value, engaging handling and an excellent reputation for reliability, the Mazda3 deserves to be on your shortlist if you’re looking for a family car.
