University of Oxford appoints Dr Jaskiran Kaur Bhogal to Guru Nanak Research Fellowship

Wolfson College, University of Oxford, has appointed Dr Jaskiran Kaur Bhogal to the new Guru Nanak Stipendiary Research Fellowship. The prestigious position, which will begin in February 2025, was made possible through a fundraising campaign primarily supported by Britain’s Punjabi Sikh community.

Dr Bhogal, who holds a bachelor’s degree in economics and a master’s and doctorate in anthropology from the London School of Economics, will focus his research on exploring the preservation of the intangible heritage of the Sikh community. Her project will examine how Sikh families in Britain maintain their connection to their spiritual and cultural heritage through childbirth, child-rearing and family practices.

Drawing on the traditions and teachings of Guru Nanak Sahib, Dr. Bhogal’s research aims to shed light on how Sikh families create Sikh spaces within their homes and daily lives. This study will provide valuable insights into how the cultural and spiritual heritage of Punjab is preserved and transmitted from generation to generation in the context of the British diaspora.
