Why is Subway ending its $6.99 meal deal early? Drama explained

Fast food franchise Subway has decided to end the $6.99 deal ahead of schedule. The reason for this abrupt end is that the agreement did not produce the expected results. This didn’t attract enough buyers to continue for another month.

The fast food giant launched the offer at $6.99 keeping in mind National Sandwich Day, which falls on November 3rd. This exciting deal offered customers a six-inch submarine, a drink and a packet of crisps or two biscuits.

The restaurant’s corporate office sent a notice to its operators that the $6.99 deal would end on November 27, 2024, not December 26, 2024, as previously agreed. However, it will still be available on Subway’s digital channels. According to the memo,

“The Meal Deal was designed to help increase traffic, sales and ultimately profitability at the restaurant level, and achieved these goals during the market test. »

The fast food chain noted that while the national Meal Deal promotion met daily redemption expectations, it did not achieve the overall desired results. As a result, they planned to move to a digital offer of 20% off any subscription ordered through their app until January 5, 2025.

According to Catering company, Subway said it tailors value offerings as needed, emphasizing a data-driven approach to balancing customer preferences and franchisee profitability.

The company highlighted its ongoing efforts to test valuable platforms that drive traffic and repeat visits while responding to feedback and making adjustments to benefit franchisees, customers and the company.

When announcing the meal offering, Douglas Fry, president of the North American division, emphasized the importance of offering customers quality and flavor at an affordable price. He highlighted the $6.99 meal deal as a value-driven offering that ensures customers can enjoy their meals with complete confidence and satisfaction.

Subway has faced challenges related to franchisee resistance to value deals, which has contributed to the closure of approximately 7,000 locations in the United States since 2015. Despite hopes for good results from the Meal Deal, its results were insufficient. After analyzing the data and consulting with franchisees, the company decided to discontinue the promotion.

U.S. sales grew 2% in 2023 from the previous year, according to Technomic. CEO John Chidsey, who led the chain since 2019 and oversaw its $9.55 billion sale to Roark Capital, announced his resignation effective at the end of the year but will remain a consultant for international growth.

Meanwhile, interim CEO Carrie Walsh, Subway’s president of Europe, Middle East and Africa, will lead while the company searches for a successor. The fast food chain plans to expand with commitments for 10,000 new franchisees, many of them international, according to The New York Post.

The Double Chocolate Peppermint Cookie contains double chocolate dough, peppermint extract, chocolate and white chips and candy cane pieces. At less than $5, it comes hot in festive packaging.
